I’ve written before about building distinctive civic visual identity through the use of city flags.
Washington, DC has a very solid city flag. In fact, the organization of flag experts rated it the top city flag in the country. You see it around a lot there, on street signs, etc.
The Washingtonian just ran a brief piece with a few milestones in the history of the increasing public use of the city flag, including everything from licenses plates to beer cans to tattoos.
Washington is a unique place because it’s not part of any state, and thus it doesn’t have a state flag competing for attention. Nevertheless, it’s a great case study in making use of a city’s flag.
