The Landscape of Global Urbanization

Most of the urbanist discussion in America is US centric. But that misses important global dimensions and perspectives on urban policy.  So I’m pleased today to feature a podcast with Ricky Burdett, Professor of Urban Studies at the London School of Economics and director of the LSE Cities program. I caught up with him while we were both in Chicago for the Chicago Forum on Global Cities last week.

Speaking of LSE Cities, they are now offering an executive masters in cities, which takes a year and only requires five one-week periods on site in London. If you’re interested, check it out.

Burdett shares his London-based perspective on urban topics, including:

  • 0:00 Introduction, Overview of the global urbanization landscape
  • 3:08 How can developing world cities cope with their astonishing growth rates?
  • 5:07 Which developing world cities are getting it right?
  • 6:17 How do we deal with soaring housing prices in the developed world (London, Hong Kong, etc.)?
  • 10:15 What’s your one piece of advice to American urban leaders?
