Indianapolis non-profit People for Urban Progress just released the first selection of products they produced as part of a cool new partnership with Amtrak.
I ran first ran into PUP back when they were just getting started and wrote up a profile on them in 2010. They have carved out a niche in taking old industrial fabrics, starting with the teflon roof of the now-demolished Hoosier Dome, turning them into well-designed accessories, then recycling the proceeds back into public improvements. It’s a great model. I’ve personally bought some of their products, including a wallet and a messenger bag.
The Amtrak partnership appears to be their first national deal. Here’s a video about it. If the video doesn’t display for you, click over to watch on Vimeo.
If you are interested in having your very own Amtrak backpack, tote bag, or Dopp kit, you can order them from PUP’s web site. I don’t get any money if you buy or for promoting them. I just like PUP’s products and want to support their mission.
As a reminder for those of you in Indy who might see this, I’m speaking at an event in Indy next Wednesday on the new American heartland that’s free to any readers who wants to come. Click over to find out more.
Here are some of PUP’s pictures of their production process:
